Blade batteries are new type battery packeges made of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery developed by BYD. It is designed to be safer, more durable, and more efficient than traditional EV batteries.
What Makes the Blade Battery Unique?
Unlike traditional battery packs that rely on cylindrical or pouch cells, the Blade Battery utilizes long, thin, and flat cells, resembling blades. These cells are integrated directly into a cell-to-pack (CTP) structure, eliminating the need for separate battery modules. This innovative design enhances energy efficiency, safety, and space optimization within the battery pack.
Key Benefits of Blade Battery
Ultra-Safe Design 🔥
The Blade Battery passes the nail penetration test (a crucial safety benchmark) without catching fire or overheating.
Higher resistance to thermal runaway compared to conventional Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) batteries.
Longer Lifespan 🔋
Can last over 3,000 - 5,000 charge cycles, providing a lifespan of 1 million+ kilometers for EVs.
Better Energy Density & Efficiency ⚡
Blade design allows for higher energy density within the same space, increasing vehicle range.
Direct cell-to-pack (CTP) structure improves efficiency by up to 50% over traditional LFP packs.
Fast Charging Capabilities ⚡⏳
Can reach 80% charge in about 30 minutes with high-speed charging.
Sustainable & Cost-Effective 🌱💰
No cobalt or nickel, reducing reliance on expensive and environmentally damaging metals.
Lower production costs than traditional NMC batteries, making EVs more affordable.
Who Uses Blade Battery?
BYD’s own EVs, such as the Han EV, Dolphin, and Seal.
Tesla (China-made Model Y) in some variants.
Other automakers are exploring Blade Battery integration due to its safety and cost advantages.
