Mahindra BE6 review

Amid the surging Indian electric vehicle (EV) market, Mahindra has unveiled its groundbreaking "Born Electric" vehicles on the innovative INGLO (India Global) platform. The company introduced two striking models, the BE 6 and XEV 9e, both staying remarkably true to their concept designs. These EVs boast futuristic aesthetics with bold, distinctive styling. The BE 6e, in particular, stands out with its sporty flair and dynamic performance, setting it apart in the lineup.

Mahindra equips its new "Born Electric" vehicles, the BE 6 and XEV 9e, with two battery choices: a 79 kWh pack delivering 282 BHP and a 59 kWh pack producing 228 BHP. Both feature a rear-axle-mounted motor powering only the rear wheels. In the Indian market, where rear-wheel-drive vehicles are rare, these EVs could draw the attention of driving enthusiasts seeking dynamic performance.

Design and Styling

The BE 6’s design is a standout, often described as futuristic and aggressive, resembling a concept car brought to production. Its sharp lines, coupe-like sloping roof, and edgy stance give it a unique road presence. Key exterior features include:

  • C-shaped LED DRLs and tail-lamps with a smoked effect, adding a premium touch.

  • Dual spoilers (roof and boot lid) and a raked rear windscreen, eliminating the need for a rear wiper.

  • Available in eight colors: Desert Myst, Everest White, Firestorm Orange, Tango Red, Desert Myst Satin, Deep Forest, Everest White Satin, and Stealth Black.

  • Dimensions: 4371mm length, wider than competitors like the Tata Curvv EV, with a 207mm ground clearance.

Interior and Comfort

The cabin is designed to feel like a cockpit, with a driver-centric layout and premium touches, though fit-and-finish could be improved:

  • Materials: Semi-leatherette seats, soft-touch dashboard, and brushed aluminum accents, but gloss-black elements are prone to scratches.

  • Seating: Front seats are supportive, ventilated, and powered (driver’s seat with lumbar support), but rear seats are less spacious, better suited for two adults or short trips. Rear seat comfort is a noted drawback for taller passengers.

  • Space: Boot space is 455L, plus a 45L frunk, but the high boot floor and coupe design limit practicality compared to rivals like the Tata Curvv.

  • Unique Elements: A twin-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated BE logo, a thruster-like drive selector, and roof-mounted controls add a futuristic vibe.

Features and Technology

The BE 6 is packed with cutting-edge tech, setting it apart in its segment:

  • Infotainment: Dual 12.3-inch screens (touchscreen and driver’s display) powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chipset with 24GB RAM, 128GB storage, 5G, and Wi-Fi 6. Supports wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay (though some users report CarPlay bugs), and apps like streaming services.

  • Premium Features: 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio with Dolby Atmos, panoramic glass roof, augmented reality HUD, auto park assist, and a front-facing camera for selfies or security.

  • Safety: 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, seven airbags, Level 2+ ADAS (pedestrian/vehicle detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist), 360-degree camera, and Secure360 surveillance system.

  • Innovations: AI-based MAIA architecture, autonomous parking via smartphone/key fob, and a 15km emergency backup range.

Performance and Driving Experience

The BE 6 is a rear-wheel-drive EV with two battery options, both using LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) cells for thermal stability:

  • 59kWh Battery: 231hp, 380Nm, ~535km range (ARAI), 0-100kmph in ~7 seconds.

  • 79kWh Battery (Pack Three only): 286hp, 380Nm, 682km range (MIDC), 0-100kmph in 6.7 seconds, top speed 202kmph.

Driving Modes:

  • Range Mode: Limits top speed to 130kmph, ideal for city traffic.

  • Everyday Mode: Balances performance and efficiency.

  • Race Mode: Unleashes full power, best for open roads but can feel overwhelming in urban settings.

  • Boost Function: Temporarily maximizes power, even in lower modes.

Pros

  • Striking, futuristic design with strong road presence.

  • Impressive performance (fastest Indian production car at 6.7s 0-100kmph).

  • Long range (up to 682km claimed, 550km real-world).

  • Feature-loaded with premium tech (Harman Kardon audio, Level 2+ ADAS, auto park).

  • 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating.

  • Competitive pricing for the segment (₹18.90-26.90 lakh).

Cons

  • Rear seat space and boot practicality are limited due to coupe design.

  • Firm ride quality and noticeable tyre noise on highways.

  • Software glitches (e.g., CarPlay issues, delayed OTA updates).

  • Fit-and-finish could be more premium; some materials feel cheap.

  • Six-month waiting period for some variants.

  • No all-wheel-drive option.
